Amish Values for Your Family - An Interview with Susan Woods Fisher

Bestselling Author, Susan Woods Fisher, was kind enough to answer some questions about her newest release; Amish Values for Your Family.  Enjoy!!

Amish Values for Your Family: What We Can Learn from the Simple Life

What is the inspiration behind Amish Values for Your Family?
After Amish Peace released, I had a number of speaking engagements to groups interested in the Amish. There was such interesting feedback—parents wanted take some principles from Amish Peace into their home. But how? That’s how this book came into being. I think of Amish Peace as a book where you are peeking in the windows of an Amish farmhouse. In Amish Values for Your Family, you’ve been invited in for dinner.

What are clues that we might need to incorporate some Amish principles into our family life?
One of the keys to contentment in the Amish life seems to be the commitment they have to filter every decision through a set of questions: what will the impact be on our family? Will it bring us closer to God? Closer to each other? Adopting that kind of decision-making helps to keep the demands of life in their proper perspective.

Do you have to "go Amish" to have a simple life?
No! Not at all! But the Amish do provide some wonderful examples to us of how to prioritize what’s truly important, to slow down as a family, to safeguard time together.

What makes AVFYF unique from other parenting and family life books?
During these speaking engagements, there was always a moment when the audience stilled, leaned forward in their chairs, and began to scribble notes. It happened when I made this statement: “Children are loved but not adored.”  The Amish have a different way of relating to their children—they highly value children, but they have clear expectations in their home. I think they provide a better balance of loving children, yet raising them with an eye on adulthood.

Explain the Road Map sections of the book.
The Road Maps are a practical way to take some principles of the Amish life and weave them into your family’s life. After a story about an Amish family that loves to go bird watching together, there are suggestions to encourage your children to be knowledgeable about nature. Another story describes a father and son who build a rabbit hutch rather than buy it. The Road Map gives some of the benefits of what happens when a parent slows down and takes the time to teach a skill. Wonderful things happen!

What are one or two principles you talk about in AVFYF that families could easily adopt into their lifestyles right now?
There’s a theme of revering nature that runs through many stories. The Amish are outdoorsy—they are so aware of nature! I think that is one thing we parents can do a better job of—turn off the TV or computer, take a walk, plant a garden, provide a backyard bird feeder, stargaze at night. Get outside! And start to notice this beautiful world God has created.

In the introduction, you introduce a concept you call the "disappearing childhood phenomenon." Please explain.
There are quite a few studies that show some alarming trends in modern American families. Children’s free time has declined by twelve hours a week in the last twenty years; time spent on structured sports activities has doubled, family dinners are down by a third, and the number of families taking vacations together has decreased by 28 percent. Parents now spend 40 percent less time with their kids than they did thirty years ago. And another study found that the higher the income, the less time a family spends together. These findings are troubling. By contrast, the Amish maintain one of the most stable family systems in America. They’re doing something right!  And I think it has something to do with the amount of time they spend with their children.

You've spent a lot of time researching today's families and family dynamics for this book, what are some of the major struggles families are facing?
The pressure to succeed, to be the best. Many parents place their need for significance onto their children. Here’s where the Amish differ from modern America—we have a focus on raising children who are special. Unique. Admired and respected. They have their focus on pleasing God.

What one Amish principle stands out the most to you?
The one that has stuck with me the most—sometimes like a beacon, sometimes like a pebble in my shoe—is their intention to forgive. They have a deep humility about their own sinfulness before a holy God. If we can’t forgive others, how can we expect God to forgive us? It’s such a model to me—to learn to forgive readily and quickly. Practicing forgiveness on a daily basis, with little things (bad drivers, grouchy store clerks, insensitive friends), helps us when we need to forgive big things.

In what ways do the Amish apply their principles to their daily life that you feel is unique or interesting?
A few months ago, I was visiting some Amish friends in Lancaster. There had been a fire in an Amish neighbor’s home, and the firemen thought the cause of the fire could be pinpointed to a faulty product. My Amish friends were discussing how to find out if the product was, indeed, the source of the fire. I asked my friend what she would do with that info, if she knew it was true. In the non-Amish culture, that would mean grounds for a lawsuit!

“Nothing,” my friend said. “It would just be interesting to know.”

That was such a metaphor to me of how the Amish handle adversity. They don’t ignore it. But they don’t dwell on it, either. They don’t seek revenge or restitution--they leave that in God’s hands. But they would certainly avoid buying that product in the future.

Is there anything about the Amish that could be considered a "stereo-type" and isn't really true?
Formal schooling for the Amish ends at eighth grade. There is an assumption that education ends, too. Not so! I have been astounded at the depth of knowledge, curious minds, active intellects, and resourceful energy of these hardworking people. In fact, I’ve had discussions with a few bishops that have felt like I back in college, facing a brilliant theologian. I’ve never been in an Amish home without seeing bookshelves line the walls. Filled with books that may surprise you, too! Authors such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Max Lucado, Catherine Marshall.

The Amish are lifelong learners. Their schooling is designed to not speed through skills, but to master them. That seems to be the heart of their work ethic. Whatever they do, they do well. Here’s the most amazing story of all: I stayed in the home of an Amish family who had run a dairy for years. When the eldest son was ready, the dad handed the management of the dairy to his son, and he then started to hire out as an electrician. An electrician! Remember—the Amish don’t use electricity! He was self-taught, and very successful. Such an example to us all…to keep learning!

Do you have a favorite Amish recipe?
I do! In fact, this recipe is from the electrician’s home. It is DEE-LISH!

Overnight Blueberry French Toast

12 slices bread cut in 1 inch cubes
8 oz. cream cheese cut in ¾ inch cubes
1 ½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries
12 eggs
1/3 cup maple syrup
2 cups milk

Place half of bread cubes in a 9x13 baking dish. Top with cream cheese, blueberries, and remaining bread. Beat eggs, syrup and milk and pour evenly over bread. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until well done.

Top Ten Items Every Good PTA Mafia Mom Has Tucked in Her Purse At All Times

I am pleased to welcome Elsie to my blog!  I am thrilled that she chose to write on this topic and loved how entertaining her guest post and interview turned out to be!  Enjoy her top 10 list and then check out our interview!  Of course, don't forget to connect with her on any one of her many websites and check out this wonderful book!  The title below is linked to Amazon.  Feel free to click and find out more about Elise!!

Top Ten Items Every Good PTA Mafia Mom Has Tucked in Her Purse At All Times
by Elsie Love, author of Confessions of a PTA Mafia Mom

Confessions Of A PTA Mafia Mom

1. Bribe money. At least a coupl’a hundo’s broken down into untraceable, smaller denominations.

2. Vamp Red lipstick—matte & shiny varieties. Matte for day to day business. Shiny for extra sex appeal. Either works in a shake down or shoot to kill scenario.

3. A small makeup mirror. Great for checking the ‘do’, it doubles as an over the shoulder spy mirror.

4. Cell phone with the latest picture taking technology. A clear picture, snapped at the right angle (without the subject’s knowledge) can earn you free highlights & waxing for life.

5. An extra pair of thong panties. If you’re going down, you don’t want to be strip searched in your granny pants.

6. Gum, extra strong & sugar free. Martini breath is not widely accepted at school functions.

7. Little black book.  How else can you keep straight who is sleeping with whom?

8. Super Glue. In a pinch, it really can suspend someone from a ten foot construction beam, at least long enough to make a quick escape.

9. Your grandmother’s secret brownie recipe. For those in the PTA flock who still believe it is about box tops & soup labels.

10. Handi- Wipes w/bleach.  The first rule of being a PTA Mafia Mom is: leave no trace.

Interview with Elsie

Confessions of a PTA Mafia Mom is your third book.  What else have you written?
My first book was a suspense thriller titled, Killer on the Key. It follows two women-- both named Maggie-- from two different time periods. Their lives end up intertwined over a “family curse”. I wrote it while on vacation in Longboat Key, Florida. While we were there, our neighbors told us about a small cottage nearby. The owner had passed away, and was found under her bed. That got my creative juices flowing.

My second book, Opals & Rubies, is set in Sevierville, Tn. It has quite a few horror elements in it, but really for me it is a book that questions conventional wisdom about redemption. The characters are dark & gritty. Rough around all the edges. If you choose to take the plunge, consider yourself forewarned…

Both books were written under my alter ego E.B. Loan, with a different publisher. I’m happy to announce my new publisher has agreed to pick up both titles & re-release them (with outstanding new cover art) next spring. Of course, you can always get a first print run copy now.

I suppose I should mention that I write a monthly editorial on different aspects of writing/publishing for The Inspired Quill Publishing House.

And last, but not least, I just sold the digital rights to one of my short stories, Looking Glass Lilly. It will be listed on Amazon.com as part of the Istoria Books LUNCH READS series, shortly. I’m very excited about that!

Where do you find you pull the most inspiration from in regards to new novel ideas?
Everyday life provides so much great material! Having a mind that thinks in circular patterns helps as well. Circles and spirals make more interesting designs than straight lines.

If you could be any super hero, who would you be?
I can’t think of a super hero, but I’d love to have the watch from The Twilight Zone episode that freezes time. If I could add six more hours of productivity to my day and still get eight solid hours of sleep, I’d be unstoppable! Plus, I’m fairly certain I’d age at half the rate of everyone around me—take that wrinkles & cellulite!

If you weren't a writer what occupation would you want to have?
Since I’m still in the ‘starving artist’ phase of my career, I think I’m still striving to call my writing ‘an occupation’. Now, if I could choose anything, I think I’d go with trust fund baby (can that be considered an occupation?). It comes with endless cash and free time, which I could then parlay into more writing—oh and yachting—let’s not forget yachting.

Favorite Book?
Anything by Erma Bombeck. I believe I read The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side of the Septic Tank when I was eleven. Even then, I got it.

Favorite Author?
Erma. The world lost a great comedic writer when she passed. I also love old Stephen King. I’m also a big fan of some of the new Indie works. Indie is so super cool. It is a movement that is changing the art world on every level.

Last book you read?
I just finished, THE TOWMAN’S DAUGHTERS, by David J. Walker. It will be out in print in early Oct. Great read. A mystery based in Chicago. Funny, well written, impossible to solve before the end…I loved it.

Reading anything now?
MISTAKES, by A.M. Hayward & L.J. Holder. I just started it, so I will withhold any and all comments until my formal review.

Any book you wish you could finish but haven't?
MEIN KAMPF. I keep trying; I just cannot get into it. I want to finish it so I can write a scathing ‘you suck, Hitler’ review…but I don’t think it is in the cards.

Favorite snack food?
Cream Cheese Jalapeno poppers with a side of spicy wings

Favorite drink?
Wine, in any variety, any time, any day…

Favorite Pizza Topping?
I’m a Chicagoan. I go for the classic thin crust, sausage & mushroom.

How can fans connect with you?

Interview With Susan Mallery & Her Cheerleaders

Only Mine (Hqn)

Tell us about ONLY MINE.
Each book in the Fool’s Gold series is a standalone novel, meaning that you won’t get lost if you read them out of order. Fool’s Gold is a town facing a serious (and seriously funny) problem – the 2010 census revealed that the town is suffering from a man shortage. Fool’s Gold has become the punch line of countless jokes on TV talk shows, which makes the strong, independent women in town pretty darn crabby... and which attracts the attention of a sleazy TV producer.
In ONLY MINE, it’s Dakota Hendrix’s job to interview potential contestants. After she recommends two handsome young twins for the show, the twins’ gorgeous, stern older brother demands that she declare them unfit. Finn Anderson wants his brothers to return to college. Finn has raised the boys since their parents died, and he won’t consider his duty done until they graduate. While Finn does everything he can to strong-arm or coerce his brothers back to Alaska, Dakota is struggling with a problem of her own, a problem so big that it will change the course of her life.
You can read free excerpts at www.foolsgoldca.com. You’ll find lots of freebies and fun bonus content there, too!

How did you come up with your Fool's Gold series?
I knew I wanted to create a series based on a place. In the past, I’d written series based on a family, so once I ran out of siblings, I ran out of stories. Readers kept asking me for more in every series. They loved that sense of connection, and they wanted it to go on. Debbie Macomber was the one who suggested I stop writing about families and start writing about a place. With a place, the story possibilities are infinite. (Debbie Macomber is like my Mayor Marsha – I never say no to Debbie! She’s a genius.)
The place itself needed to have a strong identity. As I was brainstorming the series, I heard a story about the then-upcoming 2010 census, about everything a town can discover about itself from census results. I wondered, “What if there was a man shortage?”
So Fool’s Gold was born… the town with the man shortage. But instead of making the women eager to get more men to town, I tweaked reader expectations and made the women strong, self-sufficient, and kind of crabby that anyone would think they need more men. They can run the town just fine without men. Which means that any men who do move to Fool’s Gold have to earn the right to live there . . . and they have to earn the hearts of the women they love.
www.FoolsGoldCA.com  is my gift to readers who have been so loyal to me. I wanted to create an experience for readers that goes beyond the books. On FoolsGoldCA.com, readers will find amazing bonus content such as between-the-books updates, stories and pictures from the characters’ weddings, Fool’s Gold magazines, a map of town, and funny ads from local businesses… I could keep going, but the truth is, you have to see it to get it. Fool’s Gold is the Land of Happy Endings!

What draws Dakota and Finn to each other?
At their core, Finn and Dakota both value their families more than anything. Finn thinks he wants to be done with his familial duty. He wants to get his brothers through college so he can return to his days as a carefree bachelor, but he will learn that he’s not that guy anymore. Somewhere along
the way, he grew up. At heart, he’s a family man.

You love to write about families, such as the Hendrix triplets. Why?
I was an only child, so I love writing about the big, boisterous family that I never had. Triplets are an extension of that – three sisters who have been together since birth. Each of the triplets has her own personality, but the experiences these three women have shared throughout their lives make them as close as it’s possible to be.

You’re known for both the depth of your characters and for your humor. Do both come naturally to you?
I think men and women falling in love with each other is inherently hysterical. Who came up with that bright idea?! Men do everything they can to avoid emotion, and yet they’re irresistibly drawn to women, who overflow with emotion. When I get teary-eyed over a commercial, my husband looks at me like I’m completely nuts. There’s this constant push-pull between men and women that never really goes away, and it will always be funny to me.
Most of my storylines are not funny in and of themselves. My characters deal with some very serious issues in their lives, but their ability to find the humor says a lot about their resilience. I like people in real life who can laugh at themselves, and I like that in characters, too.

Do you plot your books before writing?
I do a lot of plotting in advance, which means I can write the story quickly, which further means that I don’t lose interest. For me, the creative rush is highest during the plotting process, and the actual writing of the book is more about getting the story down on paper. I’ve tried
writing without a plot, and it just doesn’t work for me. I enjoy the aspect of surprise, but I dread revisions. Even when a book is thoroughly plotted, though, the characters can sometimes surprise me. I was sweetly surprised by a secondary romance in ONLY MINE.

How many more Fool’s Gold books will you write?
There will be at least seven more books after this year’s. In 2012, three delicious cowboy brothers and their younger sister will move to Fool’s Gold. And in 2013, I think I’m going to establish a bodyguard academy on the edge of town. After that, who knows? If readers clamor for more from Fool’s Gold, anything’s possible. (You can let me know you want more by writing to me at www.facebook.com/susanmallery, www.twitter.com/susanmallery, or www.goodreads.com/susanmallery.)

Are you working on anything new outside of Fool's Gold?
BAREFOOT SEASON, my next women’s fiction novel, will be out in April 2012 and will launch a new series set on quaint Blackberry Island. The story is about two former best friends who form a turbulent truce to save the inn they both love.

The recent Buzz has been that you have your own team of Cheerleaders for the release of Only Mine and the books to follow.  How did the idea come about?  What is their purpose?  How did you choose the squad?

Often, I hear from excited fans who discovered me because someone put one of my books in their hands and said, "You have to read this!" It moves me. And this year, it inspired me to create the Fool's Gold Varsity Cheerleading Squad. I decided to form a team of avid readers to share with the world their love of Fool's Gold, the Land of Happy Endings. (Fool's Gold is the setting of my ongoing series of romance novels. It's a quirky small town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Fool's Gold is dealing with a man shortage. This year's stories center around the Hendrix triplets. They are ONLY MINE, ONLY YOURS, and ONLY HIS.) The cheerleaders will earn lots of prizes along the way for doing what they love - talking about books - and I will dedicate a book next year to the grand prize winner.
I invited my fans to "try out" for the team by sharing three creative ideas for spreading the word about Fool's Gold. I was overwhelmed by the response! More than 500 fans tried out in the first few days, with some pretty amazing ideas. As I read through their applications, their enthusiasm brought a lump to my throat. I wish I could have accepted every one of them and had a cheerleading battalion that could take over the country. Unfortunately, I
only had 25 advanced copies of ONLY MINE to give away. Selecting the final 25 was a daunting task. I wanted to get a good mixture of people who emphasized online ideas and those who emphasized in-person ideas, such as standing in front of a bookstore on release day, wearing a sandwich board, ringing a bell like the Salvation Army. (Yes, she got picked. Hi, Stacey!) I also wanted cheerleaders from all across the U.S., so geography played a
role.

I don't know if it was pure luck or my discerning genius, but I am thrilled with the cheerleaders who made the team! They've handed out bookmarks, talked to people at the bookstore, called long distance friends. And now they're doing a blog tour to tell the world how much they love Fool's Gold!

Where can readers meet the squad?
The cheerleaders are pictured on my Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/SusanMallery?closeTheater=1.  You can also join my Goodreads fan page http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/8716.Susan_Mallery and my goodreads group to discover other readers who love my books! (Including
the cheerleaders!) (

Will your squad answer some questions?
They would love too!!  Readers please meet the squad…

Why did you try out for the squad?
Angela: Honestly? Because I thought it would be fun. I LOVE Susan's books... I've been a fan of hers for years. I've met some really great people through FB author pages and knew I'd enjoy meeting and working with a crew who enjoyed her books. It's hasn't really felt like a competition.... more like a group of women with similar interests. Already, I've met more people than I imagined and it's only been going on for a week!

Marilyn: Because I missed the last try out!
What is your favorite Fool’s Gold title?
Kelly: Sister of the Bride, which was part of the Summer Brides anthology. I could relate to Kate being a complete tomboy and sportswriter myself.
What's your favorite book by Susan?
Beccie: My favorite book of Susan's would have to be from her Buchanan Family series, "Sizzling".  I love Reid's character and how he falls in love with the smart and understated Lori.  I guess I see myself in Lori and that's why I love it.

Marilyn:  Accidentally Yours and Sunset Bay
How did you discover Susan for the 1st time?
Stacey:  I am an avid reader of the Harlequin Desire line and found Susan that way.  Her “Millionaire” series was my favorite.
Jen:  My Aunt had given me a stack of books & Susan’s was included…I can’t remember the title now (of course), but it was with the ex football player & a bakery.
What made you an avid fan of Susan's books?
Heidi: Susan's writing made me an avid fan!  I love the way her writing can pull me into a story, make me feel part of a small town, and fall in love with the characters.  As I began to research her list of back-list, trying to find more to read, I found that Susan is a very fun and out-going person.  The creativity behind Fool's Gold website is brilliant and has me wanting more and more from this small community of people.  I love how Susan tries to connect with her readers through her website and blog...the videos, yummy recipes, and I love the fun stories and pictures of her dog, NIKKI.

Jennifer: Her writing is humorous with a great story...she is a one of a kind author.
What's it like to be on the squad?
Charlotte: To be on the Varsity Cheerleading squad with the 24 other women who love Susan as I do is AWESOME, we all share a love for Susan and her novels.  We sit and wait with baited breath for the next installment.

Marilyn:  Fantastic
Have you read only mine yet?  What do you think?
Angela: Yes! LOL... and I loved it!! My daughter adopted a child just this year. She has 2 children, but we nearly lost both of them with her second child. Her husband refused to let her bear any more children, so they decided to adopt. The months and months of filling out paperwork, and it happened just as suddenly for her as it did for Dakota. I really liked how strong Dakota was--she never whined or complained about the hand that Life dealt her. Finn was a hero who was easy to respect. Even though he comes off strong in the beginning, you know WHY he's the way he is. He's like the parent, but not. And so close to feeling like he could do "his" thing.

Why should readers buy this book?
Kelly: Because it will make you smile. This is the perfect escape from reality with some wonderful characters read.
Marilyn:  Why not?
Any favorite quotes from the book?
Angela: "You're not funny," her mother snapped. "If you think this is humorous, you're wrong. I'm in crisis here. A really, really big crisis. I feel sick to my stomach, my head hurts, I'm retaining enough water to sink a battleship. I'm a woman on the edge. You need to respect that."

Charlotte: "Mom I'm pregnant!"  bhahahah I would have been killed but her mom embraced her and wanted to share in her love.

Be honest... What's Susan really like?
Jennifer: She is humble and an absolute doll!!

Jen: She’s amazing!  I never thought she would be as involved with our squad as she has been.  Everyone and I feel I need to keep up & stay on top of those.
Tiffany: Supportive, Caring, Giving, Friendly, Creative, and a great author!  She is someone you would want as a friend in good times and bad.  She really has been so kind and supportive of all of us even when it has nothing to do with her or her books!  She just cares.

Q&A with Claire Cook

Where did you get the idea for Best Staged Plans?
I didn’t! My readers did. I remember it exactly: I was rushing around trying to get some packages mailed off, and I dropped my reading glasses into one of them as I was taping it up. So I did what every modern woman would do and I posted a funny comment about it on Facebook. The response was amazing – hundreds of people jumped in with their own reading glasses stories, and then everyone started saying, “There’s your next book, Claire.” So I went with it!

What came next?

For me, a huge part of the fun of being a novelist is that I get to live other lives vicariously. And I know my readers often get ideas for their own lives from my novels. So I started thinking about what would be an interesting job to explore. Professional home staging seemed like the perfect midlife career – it’s creative and flexible, life experience is an asset, and it’s a growing field. And from there I thought, what if the heroine was a home stager who was struggling to sell her own house? Her husband was dragging his feet, and her borderline adult son moved home and was living in the basement bat cave….

Now that you’re an expert, what advice would you give to people who want to hire a home stager – or even to become one?

Ha! I did lots of research, and there’s plenty of solid staging advice in Best Staged Plans, but I’m hardly an expert. In fact, I keep telling everyone to ask me questions about things like de-cluttering and paint colors fast, before I move on to my next novel and forget everything I’ve learned! If you’d like to find a real, as opposed to a fictional, professional home stager, or look into becoming one yourself, a great place to start is The Real Estate Staging Association® (www.realestatestagingassociation.com), a member-governed trade association for home stagers. On the RESA website you’ll find a list of accredited home stagers, a consumer’s guide to home staging, information about training and accreditation, and lots more.

Do you and Sandy Sullivan, the narrator of Best Staged Plans, have anything in common?

Absolutely. We even live in an almost identical 1890s Victorian - it’s such a cool house that I kept most of the details. And, like Sandy, I’m facing the choices and adventures that come with the whole empty nest stage of life.

The comment I hear most often from readers is, “OMG, you’re writing my life!” Well, that’s because I’m living it, too! But even though this novel cuts close to some aspects of my own life, with all of my novels, I use bits and pieces of real details from my life, the lives of everyone who’s brave enough to be friends with a novelist, things I’ve read or overheard at the gym or from the next table at a restaurant, and things I imagine. Then, it’s as if I put them into an imaginary paper bag, shake them all up, and pull out all the pieces in a new order. I guess you could call it my Shake ‘n’ Bake method for writing a novel!

What is Readers for Readers and how did it come about?

With every novel, I look for opportunities to give back. I’ve spoken and signed books at thematically linked fundraisers, and I’ve taught lots of free writing and reinvention workshops. When a thread about homelessness found its way into Best Staged Plans, I was completely surprised to find out, along with my heroine, that not having inexpensive, non-prescription reading glasses is the biggest obstacle to disadvantaged people over forty re-entering the workplace. Every midlife woman I know has a handful of outgrown reading glasses, so I decided to set up a Readers for Readers page on my website, where I’ll list the mailing addresses of women’s shelters who would be happy to accept donations of reading glasses.

Does it feel different to be publishing your eighth novel than it did your first or second? Or do the pressures and expectations remain the same?

I could answer this question so many different ways, but the truth is I don’t spend much time thinking about these things! I write for my readers, and if they’re happy, I’m happy. Beyond that, I focus on trying to become a better writer with each novel, and I think I’ve done that. I also have the most amazingly supportive readers and more of them discover my books with each new release. I can’t control the rest of it, and worrying about it will only take me away from the things I should be thinking about.

What’s your best advice for women struggling to find their own next chapters?

Stop listening to the naysayers. Try things. Make mistakes. Get your computer skills up to speed. Work harder than everybody else. Remember that, as one of my characters once said, karma is a boomerang, and help other women along the way. And, of course, check out my reinvention page at http://clairecook.com/.

Many Thanks to Claire for providing me with this Q&A!   If you have not picked up a copy of Best Staged Plans, I highly recommend it!  Check it out on Amazon: Best Staged Plans and Barnes & Noble: Best Staged Plans.  Don't miss the blurb about Claire below which includes giveaway information!!

Interview With Carol Cassada, Author of Westmore

Westmore (Volume 1)

Purchase Link: Westmore (Volume 1)

Please tell me 5 things about you.

1. I'm shy.
2. I come from Ringgold, VA.
3. I own 3 dogs and 2 cats.
4. I have an enormous sweet tooth.
5. I have a rose tattoo on my left ankle.

What are 3 unique aspects about Westmore?
1. It's the first volume in the series.
2. It's what I call a literary soap opera. I was inspired by my love of the soaps, the story revolves around three families; The Greens, The Braxtons, and The Reynolds. There's lots of romance, drama, and suspense and an accident occurs at the end of the novel which will affect all the families.
3. I wrote the ideas for the book when I was sixteen. My original dream was to be a screenwriter and I had the ideas intended for a television show, then when I was looking for inspiration for my second book I found my old notebook with the ideas written in it and I decided to turn my soap opera into a book series.

Name 5 things you wished you knew about publishing before you started the process?
One aspect of the business I didn't realize was how much work the author has to do. With my first book Going Home Again I wrote queries, sent them out, and waited for a response; that's one of the biggest problems I had; I'm impatient and most of the companies don't allow simultaneous submissions so I used to wait three months only to have them turn me down. When I did get accepted by Romance Divine, I had to make some revisions to the manuscript, luckily I had a helpful editor to point out my mistakes and offer suggestions, I had to go through the revisions a couple of times, which was tough. This time around I chose to go with self-publishing and did all of the work myself; editing, creating a cover, and setting the sales channels. Aside from all that I have to do the promotion myself, which I've been busy doing. I've created my own site (www.carolcassada.net) and I've been contacting blogs about chats, interviews, and reviews. Sure it's hard, but if you're passionate about writing, then you have to accept the responsibilites that come with being an author.

Name 3 authors you look up to.
When I kept getting rejected and felt like giving up I searched the web for authors who've been rejected and on the list were some famous authors, such as Stephen King, John Grisham, and J.K. Rowling. What I admire about all those authors is they never give up, they kept on going and look at where they are today.

What are your top 5 favorite books?
My bookcase is filled with paranormal and supernatural books, mostly real life and folklore tales. It's hard picking five books because I love them all, but I'm a fan of The Ghost of Virginia series and I love Sylvia Browne.

If you could invite and 5 authors on a cruise who would you invite?
This may sound like an odd combination, but I'd invite Danielle Steel and Jackie Collins so I could ask them for advice about the romance world. Stephen King and LB Taylor Jr (The Ghosts of Virginia) because I'm a fan of their books. And the last one would be Sylvia Browne, so she can give everybody a psychic reading.

Name 3 things that help you gain inspiration for writing.
1. Watching a lot of soap operas to get a feel of romance, drama, and suspense.
2. Music helps me get my creative flow going. When I'm writing I like to put on old rock music and then I start typing away.
3. My family, I use our relationship as the setting for many of the characters in the novel. Plus I like to incorporate some of their favorite things; like music, food, and movie stars in the book, this is my way of showing dedication to them.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you as an author?
I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of my first royalty check and I kept thinking it'd be a huge amount, and when I opened the envelope it was only for about five dollars.

What's the most embarrassing author moment you've had?
Again it'd be the five dollar check.

If you were stranded on an island and could magically name 2 people, 3 things and 1 book you could have to have with you who/what would they be?
For the book it'd be the one I'm currently reading Ghost Stories of America. As for my companions I'd chose my celeb crushes Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan as the two people. The 3 things I'd have is pictures of my family, my phone and computer to try to signal help, although with Alex and Scott I probably wouldn't want to be rescued.

Do you have another title in the works?
I'm currently working on the Westmore sequel which deals with the aftermath of the accident, I hope to have out by the end of the year.

What is your favorite season?
Winter, there's nothing better than waking up to the sight of snow. For the past two years we've had snow storms around Christmas time, which made the holidays even more special.

Your dream vacation would be?
I'd love to travel all over the world one day, but the place I would love to go to is Hawaii.

Best childhood memory?
Going to Emerald Isle, a beach in North Carolina for our family vacation. My brothers and I had fun swimming in the ocean and the pool, then we'd go shopping, visit museums and aquariums and at night we go walking on the pier. I have so many fond memories of our times there.

If you were given the chance to do any one thing over again, what would you do over?
I used to get stressed out a lot and I behaved badly during those times. I'd tear up stuff and lash out at people and I wish I could go back and change that.

If you were given the chance to re-live any one moment, what would it be?
My senior year of high school, my friends and I had so much fun. I remember we took a journalism class and created a news broadcast for the school. Also I took a drama class and we did the musical Into the Woods and I did the voice of The Giant. I don't get to see my friends as much as I used to and remembering those times we had in school puts a smile on my face.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?
Aside from writing I'm gonna be doing some traveling, I'm going to a family reunion in Kentucky and everybody wants to meet the famous author.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
Don't give up and follow your dream.
