I've decided to try something a little different this time around.  Don't worry, if you don't like change I am still going to post my review in the "normal" format.  However, when reviewing a title I ask myself a series of questions, though not all books receive the same questions.  I simply answer until I have enough information and start to write my review.  This time around, I decided to write a "review interview" in an effort to mix things up a little.  Let me know what you think!

What's the book about? (Synopsis)

With his family caught in the crosshairs of a group of brutal killers, detective Cork O’Connor must solve the murder of a young girl in the latest installment of William Kent Krueger’s unforgettable New York Times bestselling series.

What did you like about the book?
It was a well written and thought out book.  It painted a nice picture of where it was enabling me to feel like I was actually there.  I love feeling connected to a book.

What didn’t you like about the book?
I did not like some of the characters names.  This is my first novel by Krueger and when I read the names "Mal and Cork" I had a difficult time picturing them.  Mal is simply not a name.  I was having a hard time associating it with a person.  Cork is better but not by far.  Malcolm would have worked.  Cork just makes me think of wine.

Did you like the characters?  Why or Why not?  Are there specific characters that stood out to you? Were they relatable?  Did they fit their personality?  Were they well developed?  What would you change about them if anything?
Yes, I did like the characters for the most part.  Each character had enough of a back story written to enable me to understand their background and personality.  The author lets you know what kind of jobs they have held and where they are going in life.  I liked how the people were setup it made them feel real, like people you may already know.

Was the story believable for its genre?
Yes, it could be a true story.

Did it flow well?  Explain.
For the most part it had a great flow.  However, there were a few times, when you are in an action scene, that the flow just stopped and then went into a flash back moment or a sub character story.  This left you to wonder if the scene would pick up again or not.

What kind of writing style did the author use?  (Example:  Told by main character, told by multiple characters, told by narrator.)
This novel was told by each character.  I generally like the use of this format, however, the author didn't use names above the chapters to let the reader know who was speaking.  It took a bit for me to know who was talking or realize that the characters had changed. 

Would you recommend?  Why or Why not?
Yes, It had a good story that was easy to read.  It was also easy to relate to one or more of the characters.  The novel kept me hooked from the start.  I enjoyed it.

Would you read more from the author?
Yes I would.  I have already researched his back list titles and plan to read them

Did the setting fit the book?
Yes, the name of the book was where it was located.  It was also described and executed well within the setting.

Would you consider re-reading it?
 Yes

Did it catch and keep your attention?
Yes, it did.  I would pick up and read it even if I just had 10 minutes

Did you figure out the mystery or were you kept on edge?
It was a lighter mystery, so no, I was not on the edge of my seat but it did keep me wondering.

Overall opinion?
I liked the book and felt myself excited to keep the story going until it ended. It was well written, interesting, had great characters, names aside, and kept my attention.

Settling: Book Two of the Solid Series & Giveaway

The leading lady of the “Solid” series – Clio – is certainly not just like me. But when she says, “I was definitely not going to be one of those weird girls who won’t eat in front of guys. The guy thinks you’re freaky while you sit there all hungry and crabby – totally a lose-lose,” she is voicing my exact thoughts.

Just because girls and food have had such a love-hate relationship for, well, ever, doesn’t make it any less ridiculous. Even as I write this post, my husband is telling me how he vividly remembers taking a girl on a date that wouldn’t even order anything; just watched him eat. Seriously. Well, it’s about time someone stood up and said Calorie is a far lesser evil than Crazy.

That’s why it was a given when I started fleshing out my “Solid” heroine that she would eat. Real food. Without obsessing over it. Hey, now that I’m thinking about it, maybe I can establish the opposite standard for my bad guys – that they don’t eat! That may or may not be a spoiler for my future books – you’ve been warned!

Anyway, my “FoodFic” campaign is about more than just saving girls from thinking that food is their archenemy; it’s also about giving food some of its dignity back! The vilifying of food is false, mean, and just plain wrong, since we all know that the aroma of a favorite meal can resurrect an apocalyptic day. Food is a hero! Okay, that may be going a little too far.  But food is integral to our lives – chocolate-dipped strawberries for romantic interludes; birthday cake and ice cream to celebrate life; casseroles to offer solace at funerals – and it deserves a place in our fiction!

The meals Clio dives into in “Solid” and “Settling” include fried chicken with mashed potatoes and snappy green beans, and a picnic of roast beef po’ boys with blue chips and Tabasco-laced guacamole. Sometimes I make myself hungry just writing the scenes, and I hope to whet your appetite for both good reads and good eats!

Mini-Review

I LOVE this series.  It's a step outside of my normal reading but both novels are intriguing and well written, they have captivated me from start to finish!  Settling is the second book of this series and picks up right where Solid left off.  Instead of leaving the campus, Clio and her friends decide they want to stay and continue their course of self -discovery.  They are all quite unique and not ready to give up the freedom and likeness they have with each other that they don't have outside the military campus.  However, not everyone on campus wants the same thing.  Some will stop at nothing and will kill, if that's what it takes to get rid of everyone.  This novel is every bit as good as its predecessor.  I really enjoyed it!  Shelley has a great writing style that hooks your interest and leaves you wanting more!  Beware, the third book is not yet out, you will want more!   Stay Tuned for my full review to come soon.  Read my review of Solid HERE.

Mini-Review:
Cardinal Rule #1; the book is ALWAYS better than the movie! This rule is yet again proven with Rock Bottom, the story of Erin Brockovich. Though it’s hard to say the movie, featuring Julia Roberts, is not as good as the book, it’s true. Erin’s story is written with powerful emotion and detail. It displays so much of Erin’s heart and soul as she pens a tale about her fascinating journey and hardships while working for the greater good of others. The mystery, intrigue and emotional attachment make this a book that is hard to put down, yet is also infuriating.

The book is co-written but you would never know it. It is so well done that it is unclear where one author picks up as the other drops off. The two work together very well with each other, which is evident in the writing style of this novel. The novel is fast paced and intriguing, making it easy to read. I find it odd that the book is being written after the movie.  Though the book was better, it took away from the story since I already have knowledge of Erin's story.  Overall, it is an enjoyable read and I enjoyed learning more about Erin and her story.

Review:
Wow! If you thought the synopsis wasn’t intriguing enough, you should try reading the story. The book is full of mystery, drama, romance and other tidbits that make this book anything but dull. The writing style of this novel keeps the reader moving effortlessly through the pages while the story captures your attention, keeping you hooked until the end. The characters are well developed, the setting a beautiful back drop to this intriguing story.

Though parts of the story were easier for me to figure out, it didn’t deter me from reading on to find out how the story is executed and played out. The romance in this novel is full of tension between the two characters which works well for this novel. The Christian viewpoint in this book is very relaxed. It is not a novel that will throw beliefs into every other line of the story, nor would that have worked given the complexity of the storyline. Instead, the novel reminds the reader of God’s presence, the characters faith or struggles are evident and the novel leaves room for those who may not have strong beliefs to enjoy a good, decent and clean read without being overwhelmed. In short, this novel is one of the more decently written novels of its genre.

Overall, a well written storyline, interesting concept, established plot and entertaining characters make this story a great one to sink into on a rainy day! If you have a visual mind you’ll enjoy the backdrop of this novel, as it paints a picture of beauty amidst its chaos and mystery.

Review:
Characters: The personality traits of the two main characters in this novel were pretty important for the story and I feel the traits were well developed. Tempest always follows her instincts and Jake is all about being logical. The characters are typically not attracted to the other's personality type so that is part of the struggle in the development of their relationship. Also, both main characters are influenced greatly by deaths in their past which enhances their understanding of one another throughout the story. Also, I feel like the author did a great job voicing the characters' honest thoughts about the situation throughout the story by including commentary from their inside thoughts.

Storyline: The storyline was creative, yet somewhat predictable. I kept waiting for an unexpected event to occur, something to put a spin on the story, but never encountered quite what I was hoping for. Nevertheless the story kept my attention and it didn't take me long to read the book. Also, while the two main characters get together quite frequently, it is left mostly up to the reader's imagination. So if you are in the mood for steamy sex scenes this may not be the book for you.

Style of writing: I enjoyed this author's style of writing. You are able to read from more than one point of view which really allows for a sense of what the two main characters are thinking. The author seemed very experienced and was able to add good detail to help create images of the setting and characters.

Pace: Overall the pace was good. There was never a dull moment in the story, but it never felt rushed.

Setting: The story took place in multiple parts of the country, however, mainly in the UK. The author took advantage of different locations to move the story along and used France as a place where Jake and Tempest really started to fall for one another - very romantic. I always enjoy reading stories set outside of the United States and this author provided great detail in describing cities that I really have no knowledge of.

Overall opinion: I found the characters to be unique and the plot interesting, but it felt anticlimactic at times. I would recommend this to someone else to read if they enjoy a tame romance with a little bit of suspense.

Review
Elijah is a mysterious character with a fantastic healing ability. He doesn’t know how he got it; he doesn’t even attribute it to God. It just is, with its own rules. He can’t heal himself and he can’t heal dead. He has been wandering searching for God or something when he walks into a Pizzeria in the town of Antioch. This is a very strange town. The waitress, Lori is an outcast in town, along with her friend Marcus. The characters are actually really deep, considering how fast the story moves. I fell in love with Lori and Marcus, and just wanted to give Elijah a hug. There are other less likable characters, such as Josh the minister of ChristPoint church, the ONLY church in Antioch. And Josh truly rules all of Antioch, well beyond the Sunday service.

Years ago, Lori was dating and even engaged to Josh. Something big happened between them that forever changed them. Elijah comes and makes a connection with her and offers to help. Even with all that is going on around Lori, Elijah has his own past too. It probably feeds into his reasons for helping Lori and honestly helping the entire town.

That a man could have so much charisma as to slowly take over a town is totally believable, look at what Hitler managed. It also highlights that while faith can give people hope and strength, it also has the danger of taking over in a much more sinister fashion through fear and anger.

My favorite thing about the story was the flow of the story. It is a really fast read, written simple and steady. Anything the characters dealt with never slowed down, he just wrote through adding thoughts and feelings and color where needed. The story is written from third-person point of view, but with the spotlight on Lori, Josh or Elijah.

The title of this story caught my attention, as it was nearly my 2nd son’s name. Plus Elijah is a pretty big character in the Bible as well. A well chosen name for this story. On the cover there is a young man hidden in shadow, the cover is very dark. It does intrigue you, when I received it in the mail, I dropped everything I was trying to read and read this cover to cover.

I am comfortable giving this book a 5. I came home late Friday night and spent another 2 hours to finish this book, even though I knew I’d pay for it the next day when my 2 small children were ready to start their day. It was that good!

I stepped slightly out of my comfort zone with this novel and boy am I glad I did! The novel is easy to read with a great storyline that is easy to follow. Considering the scientific aspects of this book, this is a great quality for the book to boast. The characters are relatable on many ways; their relationships are natural and not forced. It makes sense for them to form as a group. Their different personalities work well together. The novel works up to a satisfying ending that ties enough questions together to leave the reader happy while leaving key aspects open for the next novel in this series entitled “Settling”. I anticipate the release of Settling and look forward to continuing Clio’s Story.


I would recommend this YA novel to readers looking for an exciting, fast paced read. The novel brings intrigue and suspense along with mystery, science and romance. None of these aspects overtake the others making it a well rounded, easy to enjoy book that has something for nearly everyone. If you stretch the idea a little it even has a slight paranormal feel due to the altered chromosomes and superhuman capabilities. I enjoyed the authors writing style and felt the novel was fairly original considering I haven’t read much science fiction to judge it as less or more than that.

Mike’s job is anything but easy this time around as he works outside of his normal environment, in a town where he has roots and secrets run deep, with a girl who is “good” and a case that requires him to share more truth about himself than he wishes. Mike’s personal connections to the town date back to 1941 but even he doesn’t know just how deep his connections lie. Both Sara and Mike open up to each other while working to solve the mysteries they each have, each helping each other to heal from past in order to have a future.

If you only remember three words of this review they should be “Buy It Now”. I absolutely loved Scarlet Nights! Jude’s writing is fast paced, intriguing and sexy. This book is romance and suspense in the most perfect balance. I felt like I was reading a grown up Nancy Drew novel to some degree. The steamy scenes are great and not over done. I was hooked on the novel within the first couple pages; an instant love of the book quickly formed and lasted through the final words. I read the entire book in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down!

Jude has a magnetizing and flawless writing style. She provided plenty of story and intrigue that mixed well with the romance between Sara and Mike. She kept me guessing at the answer to the mystery until it was revealed. Though I had some correct thoughts and assumptions, the story was anything but predictable! I will re-read Scarlet Nights multiple times in my future. It is one of those wonderfully addicting stories that will remain on my bookshelf for years to come! If you love romance, light suspense or women’s fiction novels this book is perfect! It mixes the charms and pains of a quaint small town with big city drama and hot steamy romance. Well done Ms. Deveraux! I couldn’t be more pleased.

Dreams was a thrilling, fast paced novel that kept me on the edge of my seat. Emerald is told she has a mental illness but doesn’t believe it is the truth. Once she discovers the Colorado Rockies and meets Jack and Caleb she will need to rely on her faith in God and the trust of her new friends to keep her safe from her father and his evil partner who keep drugging her for an illness she doesn’t have, because of a faith they don’t want to accept and a reality they don’t want her to uncover. Everything is hidden, nothing is what it seems and everyone has secrets of their own.

I really enjoyed the majority of this book. I felt the religious visions were a little over the top, but didn’t mind the reality of Emerald feeling God’s presence and guidance. Emerald’s dreams and visions appear to be early memories and déjà vu related incidents rather than a mental illness but the book leaves you questioning her mental stability until the whole truth is finally revealed. The novel was a wonderful read. Brittany is a great story teller. I enjoyed the psychology aspect of this novel along with all the twist and turns the story took. This part romance, part suspense, part Christian fiction novel was satisfying and entertaining. I will definitely read another novel by Brittany Glynn and will suggest it to friends.
