For in that summer, she will embark on an odyssey at once heartbreakingly tender and crushingly brutal. At times, she will experience more darkness than she has ever witnessed before. At others, she will thrill to lightness and joy she never imagined. By summer’s end, the Melton women in Sadie’s journey & loving her, coaxing her, and commanding her & will help shape her into the woman she becomes. And they will expose Sadie to all of the flavors of life as she savors the world that she brings into being.

Filled with charm, wisdom, and the smorgasbord of emotions that comes with the first steps into adulthood, Flavors once again proves Emily Sue Harvey’s unique ability to touch our souls with her unforgettable stories.

Review:
It is no surprise that our coming-of-age brings about the many flavors, spices, emotions and trials of life. Absolutely every person on earth shares this unique time period. Everyone has had their “season” or coming-of-age. For most of us this season or specific time period can be narrowed down, tucked away in our memories, leaving us with a short story of the events and places where our coming-of-age is largely remembered to have taken place. Flavors, is this time period for Sadie Ann Melton.

The book takes place on Sadie’s grandparents’ farm in the beginning of the novel, yet by then end she is unhappy and dissatisfied because she has changed. The story follows Sadie as she becomes a young woman, learns about love, life and death. It touches on her memories of losing her innocence when she didn’t even realize what innocence was. Sadie learns about life in all of its wonderful and horrific forms.

While Sadie’s story is her own, the overall idea of the book is not the most original. The coming-of-age topic is a specific time period where most people experience the same type of situations, lessons and events in their own way. The story is a quick and short read. The author does a wonderful job of writing so that the reader can easily visualize the scenes they are reading. I would highly suggest it for those who love a good coming-of-age story or for those who grew up on a farm in the 50’s as it is sure to spark memories. If you’re looking for a different read from your norm, this short story is a great, easy and relaxing read.
