“Nicole, a cute chubby, twenty-something woman, is looking for love in all the wrong places. Who would have guessed that a dumpster in the back alley below her bedroom window would hold the key to finding love?”
Originality- I can honestly say this is one of the most original books I have ever read. Who knew you could find love because of a dumpster? Not only is this angle of the story original, it brings about many laughs as well.
Characters- The characters in this novel were very realistic and relatable to anyone who has been a single woman on her own and looking for love. I enjoyed that not all of the characters were in the same phase of life. Just like Nicole two best friends, many women have best friends that are married, engaged or in long term relationships or going thru divorce while they are still searching and dating. The characters were very relatable though I would have liked to see them a little more developed.
Writing Style- The writing style was my least favorite aspect of this novel. It really didn’t flow well. I was very aware of each new sentence and punctuation. It was a choppy read for me. I included a small section to illustrate.
“At ten-thirty she knew she would not go to the meeting. Then on her lunch she was certain that she would. At two o’clock, she was sure that she would not go to the board meeting. And by six that evening she was ready for the meeting. She freshened her makeup, perfume and deodorant. She fixed her hair and added some hairspray. She re-tucked her blouse into her skirt and took a quick look in the mirror. She repeated to herself “This is about the dumpster. It is not about the big dick. This is about the dumpster. It is not about the big dick.” She picked up her day-timer, a notebook, and her favorite pen and headed to the condo board meeting.”
The excerpt is one of the few parts of the book that doesn’t start most of it’s sentences off with Nicole did this or Nicole thought that. By the end of the novel I was done reading the name Nicole.
Humor- If you read this book for one reason, it should be read for it’s humor. I don’t remember the last time I have laughed so hard that I cried at a book. This novel was full of laugh out loud moments that caught me off guard randomly. If I could pick only one reason to read this book, this would be it.
Overall- I enjoyed the novel outside of its tone of voice. A great novel, to me, loses its reader in the story. I never felt lost. I was very aware I was reading a book. I was aware of the sentences and punctuation. I grew tired of reading the name Nicole. Other than that the novel was fun to read. It’s a story any woman can relate to due to the characters. Even if you haven’t been the slightly chubby single girl, you probably were her married, engaged or single friend, mom or sister. The book is hilarious and honest in regards to life as it is. It’s not a book of escape. It’s a book that identifies with its readers who have been there, done that. I would recommend the read.
Bonus Review
I just finished a book called The Dumpster by Becky Due, the book was an easy read and found it enjoyable. Nicole is a young woman trying to find true love in all the wrong places. With the help of her two friends, with whom themselves are dealing with their own issues she finds it in the most unlikely place. The character reminds me of when I was her age and going through the same things. I started to read it in the morning then had put it aside for a few hours to take care of my daughter, picked it up again and next thing I knew I was done with it. I certainly identified with Nicole, going through the same issues she did trying to find true love and what it really meant, and like her found it in the least likely of places.
